The Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia was held and wines were judged over three days in Mount Barker. While I attended the tasting, I tasted a cross section of the wines, white and red and I was particularly impressed with the Briarose Estate 2006 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, which I found to be a great expression of the variety, the Hidden River Estate chardonnay displayed great varietal characters and was well balanced with fruit and use of oak. A shiraz that really caught my attention was the Evans and Tate 2004 Reserve Shiraz. A block buster wine, offering big fruit flavours of pepper, spice and violets. A special tasting was the Houghton Wine Company Jack Mann 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, a great wine now but I would like to try it with a little more age where I believe it will show its true character.
